Description

Under provincial rules, apartments and condominiums with more than six units are responsible for their own waste collection. While the province is expected to require significant organics diversion in these buildings by 2025, multi-residential buildings face specific challenges in successfully implementing diversion programs. All residents of Waterloo Region must have access to residential organics collection.

At the Provincial level, the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, was adopted in 2016. In accordance with this legislation, The Food and Organic Waste Policy Statement issued on, April 30, 2018, set targets for multi-unit residential buildings. Property managers must divert at least "50% waste reduction and resource recovery of food and organic waste generated at the building by 2025" (Policy 4.10). Click here for more information on the Provincial Policy Statement.

Further local public policy options to support this transition should be explored.
