The amount of energy it takes to get around our communities depends heavily on the way they are built and designed. We can improve efficiency by planning and creating more complete communities, where goods, services, and employment can be reached conveniently by walking, cycling, or rolling. Emissions from conventional vehicles are also reduced as a result of less distance travelled. These are also known as “15-minute communities.” More compact communities that use less energy for transportation help us use less energy to provide services and build infrastructure, further reducing emissions. This must be a key consideration for land use planning at both the Regional and Area Municipal levels.
